One of the most exciting parts of the ReSkillSpan project is the design of its training framework, a foundation that will help researchers strengthen the skills they need for impactful and future-proof careers. This work, led by UIIN in close collaboration with partners, sits at the heart of the project because it shapes not only what will be learned, but also how it will be experienced by each researcher.
At its core, this work package is about creating more than just a series of training modules. It is about developing a coherent framework, personalised learning journeys and a certification model that will ensure researchers can take ownership of their professional growth.
What we set out to do
The original plan for this work package was ambitious but clear. The first goal was to design a learning framework informed by ResearchComp and by earlier findings in the project. This framework would define the main thematic areas and mini-courses to be offered, along with clear learning objectives.
Building on that, the next step was to prepare syllabi for each module. These syllabi would provide detail on learning outcomes, delivery formats, and possible facilitators, ensuring that each course is consistent but still adaptable to different needs.
A central element of this design is personalisation. Not all researchers start from the same point, nor do they share the same goals. To address this, we envisioned an online self-assessment survey that would guide participants in shaping their own learning journeys. Someone focusing on entrepreneurship might end up with a very different training pathway than someone aiming to improve research communication or leadership.
Finally, we committed to creating a light certification model. By awarding stackable micro-credentials, such as digital badges, the programme will give participants recognition they can showcase to employers, funders and collaborators.
Together, these elements — framework, syllabi, personalised pathways, and certification — form the development work package that will be tested and refined in later stages of the project.
Where we are now
So where do we stand today? Over the past months, UIIN and partners have been deeply engaged in the development phase. Drawing on insights from the Synthesis Report and the ReSkillSpan investigation phase, we have worked collectively to identify the key topics and modules that should make up the training offer.
This has been a genuinely collaborative effort. Partners have contributed ideas based on their expertise and experience, with UIIN steering the process to ensure coherence and alignment with project goals. The result so far is a structured set of modules designed to cover a broad range of skills that are essential for researchers navigating today’s evolving landscape.
The framework has already gone through several rounds of feedback and refinement. At the moment, it is in its second iteration, and partners are reviewing it to provide critical input. This process of collective shaping ensures that the final product will not only reflect theory and best practices but also resonate with the practical realities faced by researchers across different contexts.
Looking ahead
By the end of 2025, the development phase will be complete. That will open the door to piloting the framework, testing the modules, and seeing how researchers engage with the personalised pathways and certification model in practice.
This next stage is where the design will be brought to life. It will allow us to see whether the modules flow naturally, whether the self-assessment tool points participants in the right direction, and whether the micro-credential model offers the flexibility and recognition we hope it will. At the same time, this work will run alongside the development of the mentorship scheme, ensuring that training is complemented by direct peer and expert support.
Why it matters
The importance of this work goes beyond the creation of training materials. It is about equipping researchers to thrive in a rapidly changing research and innovation landscape. By embedding personalisation, we acknowledge that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to development. By embedding certification, we ensure that achievements are recognised and portable. And by embedding collaboration, we ensure that the framework reflects the collective expertise of our diverse consortium.
In other words, this work package is not only laying the foundation for the ReSkillSpan training offer but also setting the stage for a more responsive and impactful approach to researcher career development.
We are excited to finalise the framework in the coming months and look forward to sharing more once the piloting phase begins. The work so far has been a strong reminder that designing learning opportunities is not just about filling gaps, it is about opening doors to new possibilities.
