Preparing academics to thrive in social ecosystems

Here’s the thing about ecosystems: they don’t just pop into existence because someone declared, “Let there be ecosystem!” You can’t download one from the app store, double-click it, and voilà—thriving community achieved. Nope. Ecosystems are more like houseplants. They need to be started, nurtured, and cared for. The difference? Less watering cans, more coffee. And maybe a shot of stubborn determination.

Just like in nature, skill-building ecosystems depend on connections. Everything’s linked. If one part falters, the whole system feels it. But it can also adapt and repair itself. That’s exactly the idea behind the impact development framework we’re building within the Reskillspan project. We’re not here to create another neat training program. We’re here to spark a living system where academics grow into changemakers.

THRIVErs like to keep things intelligent. Especially in academia. Structure is useful, but flexibility is non-negotiable. Sure, we design neat processes (because chaos is fun until you’re the one cleaning up), but academics move through them their own way. That means help shows up at the right moment, and not when a flowchart says it should. Oh yeah, we like them charts, but the system fits people, not the other way around.

And, our content modules are on the right track, baby. They are built this way. Each has its own theme and specialist focus, like strong building blocks. They connect beautifully, but they can also stand alone. Just like our hometown Rotterdam’s iconic architecture: functional, bold, and never boring. Across all modules we weave in proven skills: decision-making under uncertainty, cultural sensitivity, resilience. These show up naturally, again and again. They’re not ‘extras’ hidden in the margins. They’re part of the foundation.

And then there’s the mentors. Not just ‘experts’, but seasoned pros who have been in the trenches. Do not underestimate them. They know stuff… more than you can possibly imagine. They know what it means to stay strategic in chaos, to keep cultural sensitivity alive in diverse collaborations, to act responsibly in complex worlds, and to balance big ambition with the very human need to not collapse under pressure. They’ve lived it. They’ve survived it. Some even might have made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs, and they’re here to share the hacks.

This program is for academics with sharp minds and even sharper ambitions. People who are already leaders in their fields but are itching to take their expertise beyond the university walls. Here, they’ll learn the field skills that help them bridge research with real-world practice. And just as importantly, they’ll find space where old academic norms step back for a moment, making room for a mindset that’s pragmatic, socially oriented, and impact-driven.

Because this isn’t just about adding a few new skills. It’s about rewiring how academics see themselves and their work. It’s about stepping into conversations with people from completely different backgrounds, collaborating across borders and disciplines, and turning challenges into opportunities. In short: it’s about growing not just as scholars, but as changemakers.

Our bigger hope? That this ecosystem becomes a living, breathing network where knowledge doesn’t sit in ivory towers but flows into society, creating real change. Through our modules and mentoring, participants gain practical skills and the confidence to navigate complexity with clarity. But more than that, they’ll pick up a new rhythm. One that’s connected, socially responsive, and unapologetically pragmatic.

It’s our Rotterdam spirit echoing: streetsmart, straightforward, no nonsense, sleeves rolled up. We’re not here to polish theory, we’re here to do the thing everyone else only dreams about. And if we succeed, this won’t just be a program. It’ll be an ecosystem that thrives, grows wild, and – unlike that sad fern in your office – actually stays alive.
